As most of you know, I’ve been on a slow-boat voyage to healthier living. Diet, exercise, hard work and a smile 🙂 So, you can guess correctly that I was a happy thing when I got my hands on this smoothie recipe book. At first I thought it would be just like every other smoothie book out there: All kale, all banana, all the time… Buuuttt, Much to surprise, it isn’t! There are actually some really cool and creative recipes inside. Easy too! Good, because I’m not exactly the home-chef type. So, I tried a few of the vegan/vegetarian recipes and they turned out really yummy.
I thought I would share a few of my faves, as well as a short review from my perspective:
Some of my favourite recipes include: Arugula Raspberry smoothie, Almond and strawberry smoothie, beet and broccoli smoothie, spiced pumpkin smoothie (of course, it’s perfect for this time of year!), Gazpacho smoothie (This, I’m dying to try!), Tropical green smoothie, and a delicious dandelion celery smoothie.
What I liked about this book:
Fantastic, healthy alternative to fast food
Quick and easy to read
Interesting recipes, not just – put a whole bunch of stuff in a blender and drink it.
The recipes look GREAT!
Each recipe includes some nutritional information
Explanation of if it is or is not preferable for weightloss and why
Each recipe includes a short breakdown of what the special benefits of that particular smoothie are
The health benefits of chocolate are actually included…Yay!
It is suitable for vegans, as milk is almond milk & yogurt can be substituted for soy.
All the sweeteners included are natural. Agave, honey, cocoa
What reservations I have about this book:
Some of the recipes include natural sweeteners, which I feel is counter-productive. Although I understand that some readers may have a sweet tooth and naturally occurring sugars in vegetables may not be enough to satisfy the taste buds.
The suggestion to have the smoothies at approximately the same time daily. This leads me to the assumption that many of these ingredients are naturally occurring diuretics, thus the need for your body to adapt.
Before I got these good recipes, I was making kale and cucumber smoothies (good, but boring after awhile) with the occasional dessert smoothie of berries and ice cream – which is totally not the right thing for my diet. Now it’s replaced with the almond and strawberry smoothie. Yuuummm…
I must admit that I initially thought that some of Rachel Zoe’s line was a little – eccentric – when it first hit the stores. Sequined knit winter hats, gloves and the like didn’t exactly seem like something I could use in -30 temps. I wasn’t exactly sure who this new celebrity stylist was that seemed to be taking the world by storm, and our T.V.’s as well.
Rachel Zoe, designer & celebrity stylist
Then one day it happened… I was in the States and happened to find myself in Saks Fifth Ave department store. They were having an incredible sale (which is why I was in there to begin with) and I was perusing the racks to see what caught my eye. There it was, a lamb leather and woven linen mini skirt. Gorgeous, and just my size! Now, I must explain, I have a deep dislike for man made fabrics. I much prefer naturals, silks, linens, leathers, cottons, hemps, wool and the like because it just feels so much better on my skin and because man made fabrics, although extremely easy to care for, make me hot and feel itchy and uncomfortable. So you can imagine my joy when I realized this skirt was my favourite fabrics, pretty and a perfect fit! Also, the % off sale cinched the deal! So, I bought it, of course! (pictured)
Now, I’m a reformed Zoe doubter. Not only do I accept her line, but I search out her items. Sometimes it takes awhile to find the perfect thing because price and material… Her line runs an average of $200 – $900 per item. (Not including accessories, thank God!). So people have to really be sure that what they get is what they want because they’ll be wearing for the foreseeable future.
Here are some of the looks from Rachel Zoe’s 2016 ready to wear as seen in Vogue.
Sometimes you can snag a really exciting deal, so I’ve taken the liberty, after searching a few reliable places to leave the links to some really affordable Rachel Zoe items that are on my lust list below: Rachel Zoe Women’s Helen Dress, Black, 4
Sometimes, after a super long day, a girl just needs to unwind.
I found myself sitting alone, on the upper restaurant deck of the commuter train. The late evening sunset was gorgeous, and I could finally sink back into my leather seat and take a long deep breathe.
The day had consisted of meetings, marketing plans and a bums rush to the finish line. Maybe a teensy stop off for a fashion fix.
As I sat, I reflected. Then i just let the day slide off me and enjoyed the view.
Ok, this girl needs champagne. Stat. I clacked my way down to the bar and requested a glass and a treat. So rainbow marshmallows they supplied! An unlikely pair, I’ll give you that. But it went perfectly as hands-down, the best comfort food you’re going to get on a train. Perfect.
I wanted to share this, because I know that there are many who sell online and basically all of us have an online shopping habit at one time or another. If you’re anything like me, you used to be an E-bay addict, until all the hidden fees and price boosts due to extra seller fees occurred. Then it kind of turned- ‘meh’. So now I search for better e-commerce platforms.
I had never heard of this site until I was on the hunt for reception decor ideas. There are LOTS of wedding, party decor and necessities listed here! Then I checked it out. (Thoroughly, as I never blog about anything until I check it out and ask questions.)
There are NO fees. Seriously, I even contacted the company to ask about it. No hidden fees, no listing fees, no sale based commissions. The only thing I could find that costs anything, is actually optional. That is the $10 fee for the verification process. You do not have to be verified, but if you wish to be verified, that is the cost. The reason this costs exists is to cover the expenses of the company in order to verify you. For the most part, I was told that some sellers choose to be verified as it contributes to legitimacy of the sellers business. Webstore.com is completely upfront about how they make their money via on-site marketing so that they can cover their expenses without charging the people who make their site highly functioning: The buyers and sellers. I don’t know about you, but I very much respect a business that is forthcoming about their strategy.
Webstore.com is really easy to navigate, and the bidding process -as far as I can tell -works in a similar fashion to e-bay. Paypal is accepted. International buyers and sellers are welcome! (A huge plus in my book, as I hate it when I’m checking out and then I’m told that such and such store does not ship to my country.) The verification process seems quite diligent, so if you find the perfect item from a verified seller you can trust that it’s coming from a solid source.
I hope you check it out, and if you decide to use www.webstore.com as your new selling platform (Hello all you Etsy sellers out there!) drop us a line with the link to your new e-store!
Thanks for reading!

This book begins with Jeff and his younger sister Pam, setting the stage in a home with a drunken, abusive father and a beautiful submissive mother. After Jeff returns home to discover that Pam has received the beating of a lifetime from her father, he starts planning to leave. No long after that, Jeff has had enough and informs Pam that he is living for good. NY is his goal. He doesn’t know how he’ll survive there or what he’ll do, but anything is better than what he’s living in. Fortunately he finds a deal he cannot refuse on his very first day in NY! He meets a man, Ahron, an ultra Othordoxy Jewish man who arranges a place to live for Jeff and gets him a job washing windows as well as other odd jobs.
Eve, a beautiful successful NY stock trader, works in one of the high rises where Jeff cleans the outside windows. Although herself being a hot commodity on the dating market, she notices Jeff when he’s outside her window and just can’t seem to shake him out of her mind.
These two do meet and the story is beautiful. However, it is a sub-story within the book. The main story follows Jeff’s life and Ahron and his family’s lives in parallel.
I don’t want to give away the good bits, so it’s difficult because I want to tell you all about it. The author; Eli Hai, has written the book in such a way as to depict the dramatic differences in the lives, lifestyles, culture and importance (or lack there of) in these lives. If you’re a fan of Yiddish, you’ll love this book. I learned quite a bit more Yiddish words, and they are carefully sewn throughout the story. I can admit quite freely, that this was a lesson of culture for me and I consider myself a somewhat worldly woman.
I found this book quite riveting. I am not usually a fast reader, but I found myself turning page after page after page in this book. It’s a good one! I do recommend this book. Especially if you are a fan of ‘happily ever after’s’.
If you are interested in reading this book, you can get it by clicking here. I am also attaching additional links to the amazon stores below if you prefer region-specific shopping:
Although we still haven’t fully decided if the reception will be outdoors or indoors, we still need to look at how to make our reception not look like a luncheon meeting, but a wedding.
Looking through all the ideas for glamming up a wedding reception, I’ve come to realize that its absolutely ridiculous what people are spending on these affairs! Who says we all have to have dozens of flower arrangements on the tables, garlands, candles, signs, table runners – all adding up to many hundreds even on the cheapest end?! I’ve now perused thousands of DIY ideas, but still, just cost of the items will end up being as much as the food.
Ok, I must admit – wedding fever is so bad that these are tempting…
I really don’t understand. I mean, its gorgeous, of course! How could not be when you’ve shelled out thousands for fresh blooms and crystals. But WHY is this considered such a necessity? Why do I feel like I have to keep up with this, in order not to be viewed as a pauper who can’t properly decorate her venue? WHY must I spend hours putting together something the day before my wedding (or day of) to lay out on tables, which inevitably, someone will have something to say about anyway.
I mean, honestly, even though it isn’t my usual formal glittering self, something like this is more my style of something fun, frugal and useful: Floral Unique Kit with 50 Lollies
Is it OK to have some fun with this stuff? Make an edible arrangement? I have been searching high and low for something beautiful and fun which won’t leave our tables looking barren and might possibly leave our bank accounts in tact.
What do you think, can I break tradition and do something fun and weird plus maybe some affordable blooms instead of these grand monstrosities that will throw me into bankruptcy? Any ideas are more than welcome!
Hi all! As most of you know, I am an avid reader and love to support my friends and fellow bloggers as much as I just can. That being said, a new kickstarter campaign has started for a book on investigative paranormal studies by Charles French. Please, check it out or pass it along if you see fit!
… You decide to edit and customize your blog page, only to revisit and discover you have posted tagged posts as features instead of moving them into the new page you created. And you never even knew you could do rolling features on the front page header menu!
So, just in case there’s anyone out there ‘in the know’ that would be willing to help a lady out; I’ve added 3 new pages, assuming they should be category pages. The last time I did this was many months ago and I can’t for the life of me remember how I did it. My issue at this point is – I can’t find the place, or the way, to place the title tag in so that all my posts under that tag will transfer to the new page category.
Help, please? Anybody?
Thanks in advance

Hi all, I found a cool little set-up on amazon I wanted to share. Since many of my fellow bloggers and subscribers are book lovers like myself, I thought you might be able to get some solid use out of this -especially since we are reading all the time.
Amazon now has an unlimited Kindle reader. It’s $9.99 per month, but they are currently offering a free 30 day trial that can be cancelled any time. As I understand it, the unlimited reader allows you unlimited access to millions of e-books and audiobooks on amazon for the monthly fee -or the duration of the free trial. Also, it works on multiple formats and mac products, not just kindle.
This is definitely a book which you cannot judge by its cover. Set in the late 1800´s, this book follows the life stories of 3 young women from very different backgrounds. Mary, the U.S. presidents daughter who bucks the system by making friends with her slave, Constanze who finds herself in a harem in the Ottoman empire after watching her family slaughtered and her mother taken and tortured, and Spera, a Ukrainian Jew fighting to survive ethnic cleansing and brutality. And what is the tie that binds these 3 different tales of very intelligent women together? Politics, industry and the rail road, of course! That huge corporate, western front on which industry relies and which has always been either loved by or aggressively battled by the populace which it affects.
This is not a book I would have normally chosen for myself to read. The beginning of this book is absolutely brutal and definitely only suggested for mature audiences, metal stomached, adults (I would not recommend this for the under 30 crowd) that understand the history of brutality against women and men of all ages during that time period. I had a difficult time understanding why this book is so brutal, until I read the authors biography. The pen name is a pseudonym which reflects the authors heritage. It suggest a Jewish- Spanish identity of the authors family history in Gaza and Hebron, stretching back hundreds of years. The biography states that the authors family were victims of ‘Ottoman imperialism and Islamic supremacism’, which is very clearly depicted in the book.
Now, that being said, there are good plots in the book and the violence does level out a bit and the plot thickens once you get a bit further into the book. The author has done their homework, as the depiction of the times, politics and way of life is incredibly accurate.
If you are interested in purchasing this book in either e-book or paperback format, it can be purchased at amazon here:
OMG..WHAAAATTT?! 😀 I can’t believe it! I’m super duper excited to share that I now have 1000 wordpress subscribers!
When I started blogging in October of 2015, I wasn’t sure I was taking the right path. I set a challenging goal for myself: 1,000 subscribers. I told myself, if I can reach the 1000 mark by my first year blogaversary, then I will continue blogging, I’ve found my place! If I fall short of that mark, then it is a clear sign that I am not doing something correctly, and after spending a year blogging, maybe its best if I pursue other options.
Today, I have reached that goal in wordpress! All in all, email subscribers included, I have reached an excess of 1,200! THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE!
I had to do it. This is my first blogroll, so I hope I’m going about it correctly. With so many blogs coming and going these days, I thought maybe I should share a few of my reliable favorites which publish good content and have been around for awhile.

There are many more blogs that I follow, but the above listed are some of my faves.
If you’re curious, what attracts me to a certain blog, I’ll tell you. They are informative, helpful, creative. The bloggers post frequently, but not 30 times a day. These are all incredibly friendly people and they realize that people are taking time out of their lives to read what they have to write. There is no posting just for the sake of posting, the content actually says something, it is well formatted, original and easy to read.
Ladies, may I have your attention!! I have stumbled upon the solution to our lipstick woes! You are going to love this stuff! I can speak for all of us, when I say that I am sick of carrying around 8 kilos of make-up in my bag and reapplying/freshening up in public areas all day, every day.
As most of you already know, I am a self-funded site. I purchase all my own cosmetics, clothes, treatments, etc. that I am personally interested in using and then, of course, I use myself as a guinea pig (It IS after all – Life Experiment!) and pass on my personal findings to you. As consumers, we need a reliable network of people who will tell us the truth as they see it, regarding these products. Now with some of them, you must keep in mind that I am in my 30’s, so what might be suitable for a 20-something with a natural glow, doesn’t cut it for this girl. I need high-end, plumping, moisturizing, long lasting, and occasionally – spackle. I have been on the hunt for the lipstick that would create the ‘ perfect pout’. Now that I’m engaged, I’m also searching for the perfect wedding lipstick.
I heard about Lip Ink about a year or so ago, through friends of mine living in L.A. This wax-free, semi permanent lip stick that is super long lasting and Smudge-free. I thought to myself: ‘Too good to be true? Yes. Absolutely. It must feel like house paint if it lives up to these standards. Must try….’ And so, for many months now I have been actively hunting lip ink products that I can 1) afford (I’m happy because it doesn’t actually cost as much as I thought) and 2) Would actually ship internationally! – By the way, I was having a really difficult time with the shipping and whoever it is that is running Lip Ink’s Instagram page, was absolutely AWESOME! They got me set up with their amazon uk page, and also the official site soon began offering really affordable international shipping as well if I wanted more than the trial package. Whoever you are, THANK YOU!
OK, so I go online. And I browse (and drool) for the ideal color kit that I think I want to use on my wedding day. I mean, this HAS to be it…right? How dreamy would it be to not have to worry about leaving lipstick all over my new hubby’s face, collar, or any of my other guests for that matter! And to look photo ready after the nuptials?! Oh yea, on it! I’m thinking since its a special day and I want to look super hot, that maybe red might be the way to go. OK, there’s like 10 different shades of red and you can play mix and match with the other colors to kind of create your own ideal shade. Hmmmmmm…..
So, I finally decide on Lava Red. There’s a process to this whole thing though, so you really should get the whole trial kit. The kit includes 2 ml lip color (will last a long time because such a tiny amount is necessary), 1 OFF towelette (lasts multiple uses if you work it right (i.e.; use a small area, cut it off, refold & replace in pouch) and 1 pouch of shine moisturizer (again, lasts multiple uses because only a teensy tiny amount is required). I added the kit to my cart, paid and waited….
I was so excited when my package got here! I tore it open, read the instructions & used it immediately!
Here’s the process:
Use the off towelette to really rub your lips with – make sure it exfoliates and gets any residue off.
Quickly splash your lips with water and pat completely dry.
Put a teensy tiny amount (seriously, I learned my lesson, the color stays on better if you only use a teeeeeeeny bit) of the shine moisturizer on as a base. Massage it in until it is completely absorbed!
Shake the color well before using. Make sure to wipe the wand, as a little goes a long way. Apply, going in one direction only, on lips. Apply slowly and don’t blot! It tingles a bit but only for like, a millisecond. Totally worth it. Let dry with lips parted for 10-20 seconds. Its recommended you do this 2-3 times to get an even, heady colour.
Again, take a tiny bit of the shine moisturizer to keep your lips shining and moisturized.
This is me, after applying.
When you’re done for the day, use the off towelette to remove the lip colour.
Now for the fun part: I wanted to take this stuff for a serious test run. See what it could manage. I applied the color at 16:00 (4 p.m.). Here’s how I put it to the test:
Ran my fingers over the color after applying, nothing came off on my fingers
Nacho nite! After dogging down on some serious snacks that isn’t the most pristine food to eat, still sporting the same pout.
Wiping my mouth with a white napkin, which is still in pristine condition. Super 😉
Rubbing my lips together constantly (My own bad habit). The colour remained, but this is where I learned that you really need to exfoliate and not over moisturize in the beginning of the application process.
Kissing session with the guy 😉 – I was thrilled to see that he didn’t walk away looking like a crazed drag queen. My lipstick was on me, not him! YYYYEEEESSSSSS!!!
The overnight test. Usually I am absolutely repulsed by the thought of going to bed with any makeup on. But again, I was doing research! Guess what? I woke up the next morning, and although not looking as perfectly pouted as this picture, my lips were still stained the same colour. I kid you not. I threw on some lipgloss and walked out of the house. Also, my white based pillow covers didn’t have a smudge on them. 😀
So there you have it; Tried and tested. This girl knows exactly what brand she’s using for her wedding day, and this will be in my make up bag from now on!
I was going to post this this weekend, but I wanted to play with the kit some more. I did find that if you exfoliate well at the beginning, and use the smallest amount of the moisturizer possible before applying the colour, it lasts better and prettier.
Lip ink carries an array of semi permanent cosmetics, and as well as this works, you can bet I’ll be trying some of their other products.
If you would like to purchase your own Lip Ink trial kit, you can find this specific colour that I’m reviewing by clicking the below image. You can also browse tons of other awesome colours by the company as well!
Hello everyone and welcome to a lovely sunny Friday!
I’m going to switch things up a bit on this post. I frequently post about MY life, My experiments, MY opinion. And I realized, that I’m not writing for myself.
Today, it’s all about you. I would really like to know: What kind of posts do you enjoy? What would YOU like to have more of or less of here? What can I do to create a more pleasant reading experience for YOU?
This Anthology, which includes the work of 5 awesome science fiction authors is a good read. It contains the following intriguing short stories.
One Man Falls by Mark R. Healy – When the Argoni arrive, there’s no time to play around. Our heroin Jahni learns a fast life-lesson as regards the need to make the sacrifices to do what’s right for all, versus what’s right for one.
Stasis Dreams by Josi Russell – When the desire for understanding morphs into something else, and one no longer considers the human factor
Spera Angelorum by Michael Darling – This story is one of my favorites. Who doesn’t love a bit of mystery as regards magic and angels!
Horizon Alpha: Highwire by D.W. Vogel -Dinosaurs on another planet? Yes! Read on… this one gets intriguing fast!
Keepers by Jared Garrett -This short story draws clear parallels on our modern day reliance on medications and vaccines in order to avoid the most feared diseases and our dependence upon them after a certain time. This is only a parallel which I saw, but it was nice to read a futuristic view of the direction we, as a society are already heading. One where we dare not go outside our normal zones, attempt to protect ourselves from real & perceived threats, and how it sometimes makes acting on the most logical of decisions – virtually impossible.
I must admit that I am not an avid sci-fi fan. That said, this was a great anthology. I was sucked into to each of the five short stories, and literally – could not stop reading. Seriously. Most people would stop after a short story at some point, and pic up reading later. Not me, I just wanted to read more and more…which is a sign of a good book to me!
They did a kickstarter campaign, which allowed for the opportunity to collaborate with the story, which I just think is AWESOME! This was the first time I had ever heard of such a thing and it just sounds like too much fun!
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in sci-fi, anyone who doesn’t have the time to embark on a novel but can read on the train or underground, and I would recommend this for teen readers to adults.
You can pre-order this anthology by clicking here.
This e-book can be purchased on amazon by following link:
Enjoy your reading!
*Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this e-book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
We have to talk about a new trend in menswear that’s actually pretty cool! In a world where menswear shops are full of the mild and conventional muted and neutral colors – with the same basic cuts (you know what I’m talking about) it is a breath of fresh air to see some variety for mens clothing with color on it! These are a conversation starter, for certain. I can say for certain that the people will be coming up to you asking about your meggings!
Now, apparently the appearance of the bright and colorful made for men, meggings, has made quite the stir on social media. These seem to be a love it or hate it type of situation. Personally, I think these are REALLY COOL! Albeit, I can fully understand why this apparel seems to be quite controversial. At first consideration, I was a bit skeptical too. However, when I took the time to check out the patterns, colours and most importantly – the way they are actually made, I found that several things set these apart from the assumed gym pant. Although these would be PERFECT gym pants. But I think they would be good for other places and activities as well. KAPOW!
Patterns and colours. The array of patterns makes these suitable for more than the workout. Take the below photos for example (Taken from the Kapow site). These sets would even be suitable for the club or music festival.
The fit. These are supposed to be incredibly comfortable. Like never want to take them off -kind of comfy. They stretch with your body and still leave things to the imagination (see next bullet point). The sizes range from a 28-38 inch (71.12 cm- 96.5 cm) waist and there is a lot of give on top of that. They are said to be very forgiving for different body shapes, as the material is adaptable to many forms. Also, for my guys who never skimp on leg day, these leggings stretch to fit your body comfortably. So if you have larger legs than the normal guy, these should still fit nicely. I know, I asked. They would be great for yoga, running, anything really that requires movement when you don’t want to let that shorts leg hang down or hike up too much! And I think these patterns would be groovy 🙂
(Just a little note: These above are my faves. ‘Supernova’)
Make. Ladies and gentlemen, this is where it gets good. You remember that bicycle shorts craze where everyones …assets were on display? Well, if you look back through the photos I’ve posted, you will see that that is not the case here. These are tailor made with extra width around the waist, so everything just sort of blends in with the waistline. As a woman, I think this is fantastic! I don’t think any of us really like it when, um…when the family jewels are standing out from the crowd. Thank you to this company for making sure to say ‘buh-bye’ to unsightly bulge!
Price. Totally reasonable at 24.99GBP, 29.82€ or $33.24 (based on todays conversion rates)
International orders are welcome and I’ve got a great code for SHIPPING on orders of two or more pairs. Orders are made through the Kapow Meggings website. (I have linked it for you). Just make sure to input the code’ LEBFREESHIPPING ‘ so you can get your free shipping! (Seriously, free shipping is HUGE) This code is only valid through the end of October.
If you’re down for the social media hunt, you can find their Facebook page here, and their instagram here. I know, I’ve been stalking to make sure these really are as popular as they seem to be. They are 😉
If you’re the kind of man who wears the clothes and doesn’t let your clothes wear you; confident, fun, happy…I say GO FOR IT! WORK IT! I know my fiancé might have a colorful surprise for his birthday…
What do you think, would you wear these? Love it or hate it? Or do you have some? (I’d love to hear your thoughts!)
*disclaimer: I did not receive payment or product in exchange for my opinion. I did however, receive a limited time free shipping code to pass on to my subscribers 🙂
Look what I did! As I mentioned in my previous gardening post, I planted lots…I mean LOTS of different kinds of bulbs this Spring. May of my plants have died from over-loving. But some strong ones have come out just magnificently! I have never planted bulbs before and had no idea what half of them would actually look like!
These beauties are growing tall and strong and GORGEOUS! I felt kind of silly, whilst walking through a flower shop with a girl friend, and saying ‘ooohhh…these are beautiful! I’d love to get some of these, but there 15€ a stalk!’. And what did I hear in reply? ‘Why don’t you just wait a few weeks for yours to bloom? You DO know they’re growing in you yard…don’t you?’ Talk about putting on the dunce cap…immediately.
But I must tell you, I’ve been so excited watching these bloom and grow, I just can’t stop myself walking by the flower beds and staring out the windows with a satisfactory smile on my face! 🙂
I am loving having fresh flowers in the house – ALL THE TIME! Winter will be so drab without them.
My apologies, time escaped me and I did not realize that yesterday was the 1st until quite late in the night. So I’m a day late…again.
My pick for August for the Recycled book reading challenge is King Lear by William Shakespeare. I think I picked this up for 0,25€ at a second hand shop. I’m a sucker for the classics and will always grab one, even if I’ve already read it!
Being a classic, I have read King Lear before. I think the first time I read it was in my english classes in University. As a Shakespeare fan, I will read it again and again. This book will stay on my shelf.
The plot is an absolute tragedy. One with whom some people to this day can somewhat empathize with, which is why I think Shakespeare remains so popular.
In summary, King Lear decides that he has to divide his realm, as he is aging and his time will come soon. He opts to divide his legacy between his 3 daughters, giving the one who loves him the most, the lions share of the estate. Two of his daughters; Goneril and Regan, sooth him with sugary words from mouths dripping honey. Cordelia (the youngest daughter whom King Lear assumes would be the one who loves him the most – and is) Is honest and open with him. This backfires tremendously when King Lear gets extremely angry and disinherits her. When her friend, the Earl of Kent, tries to defend her, Lear banishes him from court as well. But she is not left alone. The King of France, touched by her honesty, marries her.
The Earl of Kent, sensing what is coming from Goneril and Regan, disguises himself and goes to work as King Lear’s servant. Lear decides to live with Goneril, but once she makes her intentions known, he sends his servant (Disguised Earl of Kent) ahead to Regan’s with a letter stating his intention to live with her instead. The Earl of Kent is detained at the house and when King Lear discovers this, he is told that the sisters are plotting to kill him. The revenge is taken out on Gloucester, who discovered and shared the plot, by gouging out his eyes. Brutal!
Cordelia, who has married the French King, returns home with an army of French troops ready for battle with her sisters. King Lear, the Earl of Kent and Gloucester try to make their way to Cordelia in hopes of reuniting. In the process, Gloucester finds his lost son, Edgar. King Lear sleeps through the battle, only to awake and discover that Cordelia lost the battle. Initially, he is somewhat ok about it because he assumes that they will be jailed together. This delusion is shattered when he soon realizes that Cordelia is to be executed. Gloucester’s other son, Edmund, gave the orders. Both sisters are in love with Edmund and this turns into a suicide bath.
When Edmund (who has been fatally wounded by Edgar) is dying, he reverses the execution order for Cordelia. But it is too late. She is hung. Her father, King Lear, is so overcome by the grief of all that his emotional decision has caused, dies on her lifeless body. Edgar becomes King.
This is a very good read, but the written language does make it a bit difficult to adapt to.
