Winter slim-down week 11

Hello all

I’m a couple days behind on this update, so my apologies. I guess you can easily imagine how this post holiday diet update is going to go, based on the meme. (Yes, I HAD to use it)

So here’s how this train wreck went down: After 10 days of celebrating (3 days of Christmas, 2 days of New Years celebrations and 2 birthdays -all in that 10 day period), I …uh….gained a little weight. OK, I gained A LOT of weight! Once off that diet train, it seems as though the train just ran me over. There was one diet blogger who I follow @thebigfatcleanup who managed to say NO-GO to the feasting and beasting during the holly-daze, so I have to give her a big fat shout out! Girl, next year, I’ll listen!

My first weigh-in after the holidays showed me that not only had I managed to gain ALL the weight back that I’ve been struggling to lose over the past 2,5 months…but an additional 0,6 kg over the top! I weighed more than my starting weight!! (starting weight: 64,1 kg – New Years weight: 64,7 kg/143 lbs!) Needless to say, I spent the next hour or so having a minor freak-out. Luckily, some of the weight melted away after about 2 days of watching what I was putting into my mouth and continuing to exercise. (Current weight: 63 kg/139 lbs)

Getting back to what I was doing before my disastrous holiday break, and incorporating the new kettle bell exercises and planks are the plan for this week. Also, to my S.O. who feeds me lots of really healthy food, steamed and baked with love – I will be cutting back on my serving sizes…just the tiniest bit. And I’ll give you a spatula to wave around while lecturing me about my sweet tooth when busted sneaking cookie dough. 😉

I’m hoping that with a lot of effort and some well rehearsed restraint, I can be back to 61 kg /134,5 lbs by my next weeks update. Then we can continue the progress where I should not have left off 2 weeks ago. Fingers crossed!

New Years resolution time…

Whoop! Whoop! HAPPY NEW YEAR, 2016!! 😀

Aaahhh, it’s that time of year again. Time to look over your past achievements and failures, time to make that somewhat reasonable wish list for your year ahead, time to contemplate (and dismiss) all your former yearly resolutions. Some actually achieved and some that lacked.

For me? I’ve done the whole gung-ho ‘I’m going to diet and exercise and be healthy, wealthy and young for eternity thing.’ Guess what? Didn’t stick. Since I’ve already been dieting and exercising for the past 2,5 months, it seems like an unfair head start on a resolution. Time to find another challenge to add to the game.

One year, I did manage to make it an entire year without colouring my hair…and have actually managed to stick to it for the last several years since. I also managed to quit smoking Although I’m not sure whether to count that or not, as it took at least 15 tries before I put the pack down permanently. I also stuck to the plan that I wanted to get my degree abroad. At least long enough to actually get my degree! And this year, I purchased my first home. A farmhouse. A fixer-upper, but it’s mine and as of this minute, it’s still standing so I’m happy 😉 Which brings me to…this years’ resolution!

Canning! That’s correct 🙂  Welcome yourself to another new experiment. This undomesticated female is starting, as of today, to learn how to preserve food. I mean to learn not only how to can, but also how to dry, freeze, preserve in oil, etc. Before you start scratching your head, let me explain. There is method to my madness. Although my land area is quite small, it’s also quite full. There are lots of berry bushes and some fruit and veg plants that have been growing for a very long time it seems. I plan to go on a planting binge myself when Spring arrives and I really really would like to be able to use everything I am able to harvest during the year. A) It’s the healthiest option as I don’t use pesticide sprays. B) I spend a fortune at the market, so it would help me to save money for the fun stuff, like traveling, shopping and this desperately needed home reno. C) Seriously, who doesn’t want to be able to enjoy their own home grown food?

So that’s the deal. I have nothing but vinegar and a few canning jars at the moment. I’ll be trying to learn the old fashioned way before all the extra pots and canners. (Mainly since I don’t have a clue what I’m doing, so simpler is always better) Today I was given my very first canning recipe for pickled green tomato’s. Yum!

I gladly welcome any advice, recipes, warnings or ideas about food preservation. Please share, as I am an amateur!

Winter slim-down week 10

Happy Christmas everyone!

I hope you are all having a lovely holiday season 🙂 This is, admittedly, the worst possible day for a diet update. ‘Tis the season for accidentally binging on our favorite foods…I’m guilty of a sugar induced cavity fest myself. And of avoiding that scale LIKE THE PLAGUE. However, I have still been exercising daily and now I have some new goodies to add to my daily regime…starting TODAY. (As in, I already did it…not just staring and saying ‘yes, yes…later, when I’m done cooking’.)

On Christmas eve, my luh-vah gave me an 8 kg kettle bell and a bluetooth fitness armband! I’m really excited about it because now there’s finally a ‘hers’ to go with ‘his’. My S.O. is really good at what he does – fitness wise. He’s been in the field for the past 20 years. So this morning, after we all finished tearing into our gifts under the tree, he taught me how to do my first daily regular KB double hand swing with my very own kettle bell 🙂 I’ll be adding this exercise as well as 15 second planks to my regime this week. Add that to the fact that I’ve been stalking my fitness band… Did you know that 1000 steps doesn’t even burn 20 calories?! Now, I’m tightening up on that craziness No random toffees for this chic.

Fingers crossed its enough to combat that extra bulge!

Vegan Cabbage Casserole

Happy Holidays everyone!

Since holidays do have a tendency to be a bums rush for cooking, and if you’re anything like me, you usually forget at least one important ingredient; I thought I would share this recipe as a ‘just in case’.

What you need:

  • Soy pieces (I prefer the small ones that look similar to meat and just need to be soaked in hot water)
  • Rice
  • 2 veggie stock cubes
  • ½ green cabbage

What you do:

  • Chop the half cabbage into bite-size pieces
  • Boil for 30 minutes in a medium pot full of water with the 2 veggie cubes

  • Preheat the oven to 200C or 400 F
  • Take a separate large baking pan (Pyrex rocks!)
  • Fill bottom of baking pan with the uncooked rice (only enough to cover the bottom of the baking pan)
  • Sprinkle soy pieces on top of the uncooked rice

  • Once the cabbage has boiled for 30 minutes, pour everything (cabbage AND the water it cooked in) into the baking pan. It looks really soup-y but the uncooked rice and soy will soak up the water and cook in it when it’s in the oven.
  • Mix it together, but make sure the rice and soy are packed down under the liquid
  • Bake in the oven for 2 hours or until the top has begun browning.

The Miss’s mishaps

This crown, worth $300 000 has been the topic of many a news story today.

We’ve all heard it…Twitter, instagram, Facebook, the news; Full of The Major mistake in the Miss Universe pageant. For those of you avoiding the news altogether: Firstly, good for you…have a happy day! Secondly, in summary, last night Steve Harvey accidentally announced the wrong winner when the first runner up Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo was announced as Miss Universe.  When he realized the mistake, he promptly apologized and corrected the situation as best he could by announcing Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach the actual winner and Miss Colombia as first runner up.

They actually de-crowned Miss Colombia on stage, turned around and crowned Miss Philippines.

Granted, I am sure that there was a level of public humiliation shared by all front and centre on the stage. This HAD to have really demolished Miss Colombia’s ego, but I’ll tip my hat to her…she handled it well, given the circumstances.

I have to say that in my opinion Steve Harvey does not deserve anywhere near the public scrutiny and backlash that he is receiving for this. The man didn’t do it on purpose. He made an honest mistake; human error, which we all do but luckily it’s not in such a public forum. He even showed the card and apologized profusely. But for some reason, social media is just not giving the man a break! @Iamsteveharvey if you see this, I’m so sorry all this is coming down on you so hard. Mistakes happen all the time. You’re human, and people love you! Please, give this man a break!

In other Miss news; Miss Puerto Rico Destiny Velez from the Miss America pageant found herself being suspended after making scathing remarks regarding Muslims. Apparently her wildly inappropriate tweets were aimed at Michael Moore in reaction to his posting a photo of himself with a sign saying ‘We are all muslim’. I can only assume that his sign was of the same caliber as the French saying ‘We are all American’ after the 9/11 attacks, and the Americans saying ‘We are all French’ in response after last months Paris attacks. Why this induced a sudden urgency to discuss her islamophobia regarding a perceived muslim manipulation of the US constitution and desire to ‘plant gas stations’ in the USA and deem herself an expert on sacred texts stating that muslims have ‘terrorizing agendas’  and that ‘there is no comparison between Jews, Christians and Muslims’ is beyond me. I think that this shows a blatant disregard for the founding ideals of the U.S. constitution and one of it’s founding fathers, George Washington who calls the United States a Beacon of Liberty as it regards immigration and religious prosecution. This quote (Taken from the Charters of Freedom in the us archives) states that ‘The bosom of America is open to receive not only the Opulent & respectable Stranger,
but the oppressed & persecuted of all Nations & Religions;
whom we shall wellcome to a participation of all our rights & privileges.’  So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, cupcake.

To wrap up this rant with a final thought: Why oh WHY, when so many people are suffering in this world. I mean REALLY suffering. Enduring a constant fear of persecution, torture, murder, grieving for the loved ones they’ve lost, unemployed, unable to feed their children, unable to pay bills…WHY are we using so much energy and so much media to cover this event, unfortunate and embarrassing as it is. Do you realize that there are countries so embroiled in war as a daily life that much of it is no longer even mentioned in the western news? Do you know what the 2015 global rate of human trafficking is? Probably not. But Kardashian is a household name, and now even those of us who could care less about the pageant gig know who the winner(s) were.

Rant over. I wonder what kind of backlash I’m going to get over this one…but it has to be said.

Holiday Potpourri made easy

This. My first attempt at DIY potpourri. I did not fail! I also did not google. Here’s how it went down:

Christmastime in a village shop and all my eyes kept wandering to were Star Anise, cloves and glog spice. So I did what any reasonable woman does; I bought it all and told myself I’d figure out how to use it later.

When I returned and was searching my fruit bowl for what I had to eat right that minute, I realized that I had 2 citrons quickly going in the not-so-edible-anymore direction. So, my S.O. told me that if I put the peels by the fireplace the essential oils would warm up and seep out, making the house smell ah-mazing. Well, you probably know me by now…peels? No way! Lets do the whole thing! So we sliced the citrons and I put them on top of the brick on the fireplace. Heats up faster, right? And overnight..of course.

Needless to say, this little trick worked like a charm. Granted, some of the slices got a bit too tanned overnight, but who cares, it’s going in a bowl on the shelf. Smells great 🙂 I pushed the cloves into some of the slices that still maintained some pulp, mixed in about 5 anise stars (OMG, they smell sooooo yummy), and broke off some cinnamon bark pieces for the mix. My secret weapon? I have a bag of cinnamon root. (Yes, it’s technically a tree). The root, once dried sufficiently, has a tendency to crumble easily from the inside out, so you have to cut in half first. But this maintains the fantastic scent, and works great as a powdered topper on a bowl of potpourri.

Winter slim-down week 9

Nope, mr. scale…I won’t fear you anymore! To date, in the past 8 weeks, I have lost a total of 3,8 kg or 8.3 lbs! Since 9 kgs (20 lbs) was my weight loss goal, I am more than 30% of the way there…WOOOHHHOOOOOO!!!

To those of you who read my last week update, thank you for all your support and comments! My teeth are A-OK and I’m back in the game and raring to go!

During the holiday season, I’ve decided to just enjoy myself and try to make up for my utter lack of self control with exercise. The amount, duration and type of exercise change or increase bi-weekly. I’m assuming that my appetite decreased when I was having dental issues, and just hasn’t yet fully returned. Nothing drafting, just in the manner that I can go fine-dining and not come home hungry enough to eat the couch. This combined with an increasing level of excercise seems to be doing the trick!

What I’ve been doing:

  • Vegetarian diet
  • 1 coffee daily limit
  • I STOP eating when my body tells me its full! Sometimes the plate doesn’t need to be licked clean.
  • I keep eating if I’m still hungry after 20 minutes.
  • 100 daily intermittent squats
  • Rotating hand weights, kettle bells with a day break in between
  • Using my own body as resistance with stretches
  • Walking. The weather has been really nice and getting some fresh air, enjoying the outdoors – never hurt anybody
  • Real life exercise of running up and down the stairs 30 times daily 😉

I’m also super excited because we’ve managed to adopt 2 older huskies, which will be here soon! YYYYEEEEEEEEAAAA! I can’t wait…I’m soooo excited 😀 This will require several long walks or jogs daily so a win-win situation 🙂

Winter Slim-down diet week 8

Jaahas…This week I lost all the extra weight I gained and regained. But, by no conscious doing of my own; sad to say. There’s only one magic word involved in this weeks’ weightloss and that is ‘DENTIST‘. I think we’re all on the same page now.

It seems that this chic has been keeping herself so busy this past 18 months that I’ve been rather masculine in my approach to healthcare. ‘I’ve got too much to do and can’t take time away’, ‘I’m not dying yet…’, ‘I’ll go if it starts to hurt’ or my personal favorite: ‘How the hell am I supposed to go to the physician when I cant speak the language?! I’ll make an appointment when I get home’ (and then never does).

I finally went. Good news; no cavities! Bad news; Thanks to a serious addiction to chili peppers and all things seed-y (flax, chia, pumpkin, sunflower…you name it – I gobble it down. But the chili peppers seem to be the main suspect), it seems I managed to achieve a bit of a gum infection. I know…eeeewwww.  They patched me up at the docs, and after feeling as though I’ve taken a few hits to the face for the past few days am now healing nicely 🙂

Now that I’ve managed to babble my way through all the things nobody cares about, here’s what I did. As most chipmunk-cheeked victims of dentistry, I went for the softest, warmest things I could get. In all honesty, I didnt eat much of anything for like 3 days because it just hurt – but I’m not a proponent of starving yourself so let’s not go there. This past week has been all about plain yogurts with a splash of honey or something or vegan soups. For drinks, it’s been mainly vichy and herbal tea. (So, no booze and that always helps drop the extra weight)

The soup pictured above proved my favorite: Vegan Thai red curry soup broth with some small soy pieces, soup veggies (root vegetables) and fresh sliced mushrooms thrown in for good measure. The ingredients provided me with enough different vitamins that my body wasn’t craving any additional weird foods. (Which is awesome)

This upcoming week I’ll probably still take it light on the gorging myself on whatever I want for the holidays, but I’m sticking to the enjoyment plan with fingers crossed a miracle happens and I don’t wind up right where I started when New Years rolls around.

Last year, I was gifted with my first Body Shop advent calendar…and there was no looking back! I actually enjoyed it so much that I requested the same Christmas present this year. And more than likely next year as well 😉 It’s a great deal for the money, a gift that lasts all month long and longer because I actually use everything in it, and its well, just fun! 😀

Cold and Flu season quick-fix

Good morning greetings and salutations from cold and flu land! I woke up the other day with a major case of the sniffles, due only to playing too much outside during major weather fluctuations. So I figure it’s as good a time as ever to share a home remedy of mine. OK, adapted and mutilated from several friends to fit me perfectly.

Years ago, I had a horrible case of the flu and was in a country where I recognized nothing, so felt unable to confidently purchase medicine for myself without risking something odd happening as a result. A good friend of mine from the East told me a home cure his mother used to make. He told me to slice an entire lemon and boil it in a huge pot of boiling water. Eventually the water would thicken with the boiled lemon pulp, to pour that into a mug and gulp it down. I must admit, I was skeptical because who, could cure the flu with nothing but lemon and water? Why the need for antibiotics, if its that simple? Well.. guess what. Although it might not have healed me completely, this hot lemon mash drink patched me up with some relief long enough to enjoy the rest of my trip!

I used to (and occasionally still do if its appropriate) indulge in a Hot Toddy or two when feeling totally…blaaahhhhhhh. Last year I was in the Nordics, and sniffling, of course. The management of the restaurant I’d been frequenting sat me down and poured me a liter creation of hot water, honey and a ton of rum. The result was a somewhat tipsy traveller with a new favourite drink and a slightly raspy voice but with less of a cough and a much drier nose.

This year a friend of mine whom I consult on all things natural and nutritional, recommended I eat ginger or hot chili when I was totally cold, in order to heat my body temp up. This actually really works, so best not to use it if you have a fever, because it will continue ramping up your body temperature.

So here are my 2 adaptions:

For cold/flu with a fever:

Hot lemon mash with honey and a splash of rum (only add the rum if its THAT moment). This helps break up the crud, slow down the sniffles and generally chill you out.

For cold/flu with a low body temperature:

Hot water with lemon, sliced or grated ginger and honey to taste. Adding a ton of garlic or hot chili to your food will also help to increase your body temp to normalize your low fever. Also, go see a doctor! Low temps are more dangerous than high temps…so I’ve been told.

Winter slim-down week 7

Aaaahhh, indulgence. The theme of this past week. Today I approached the scale. Seems like my ‘go with what you’ve got available’ theory didn’t exactly work out as I had planned. More than 1 kg regained (about 2 lbs), but it’s actually not that much considering it’s the holiday season. So no guilt, no frustration here.

Speaking of holidays; I’ve made an executive decision. Since I started this, like the week of Halloween and All Saints’ Day – and managed to torture myself through a candy free Octobers’ end…I’ve decided that it’s just not worth the extra holiday stress of worrying about everything I do or do not put in my mouth. We all look like fat Barbie by 2nd January anyway. Am I right?

So, the plan is to just roll with it (no pun intended) and enjoy the holidays and all the holiday goodies that accompany the seasons festivities – within reason. I’ll just have to put in that much extra cardio to counteract the effects of my free-range, sugar laden, carb-filled, creme soaked and wine washed holiday diet. 😉 I also invested in a pair of sweatpants for those Netflix nights in…just in case.  (Only for use when the only person staring at me is the one in the mirror.)

Starting at New Year’s, I plan to first retake all my measurements, then… restart the diet if need-be. Fingers crossed that I can manage at least some semblance of upkeep without having to start from the beginning again.  Such as it goes with a lifestyle change for a diet, as opposed to a crash diet. Oh! And I forgot to tell you that I DID manage to make some home cooked food. I made a ton of cabbage casserole, and it turned out great! I’ll post the recipe this week…promise!

Winter slim-down week 6

Success!! Achieved at the hands of a situational comedy/tragedy…but success nonetheless! And this holiday week…I’ll TAKE IT!! 🙂

If you’ve been following, you know what I mean. If not, here’s the crash course version: Went on a journey, got all excited because I saw snow…lots and lots and lots of snow. Woke up to no electricity. Not just at the cabin, but spread throughout several small towns. After almost 2 days, power came back but only intermittently. 5 days later, it’s still cutting out. All the goodies I bought to feast on went to the rubbish bin. I worked like a big girl on survival mode and my mainstay has been the fresh fruit, veg, protein shake, seeds, muesli and crispy bread which have managed to stay good despite the power outages. Viola! Up to speed! Shall we move on?

So, with all of that, I managed (quite easily) to shed the weight that I had gained back in the previous week.  And then some. I must admit that it’s actually so much simpler when I am just eating what’s available instead of trying to avoid the temptation of all the snacks in cupboard. The lesson here is: Keep at it! For once, I wasn’t paying a bit of attention to my waist this week because there were so many other much more important things to do and worry about and in doing so, manage to come even closer to my goal than when I am obsessing over it all the time. So that’s the plan for this week. Of course I may have the option to sit around, but I won’t. And there’s no need to buy lots of junky food because I don’t need it. Although my brain is screaming at me for portabello burgers smothered in cheese, or for pan seared scallops and french beans drowning in bernaise sauce…My existence does not depend on these things. Apples, turnips, fresh garlic, ginger and lemon, seeds and breads are really just fine. Lets see where this goes this week. Think I can manage when I have a choice?

This year I am thankful for all the lessons I’ve learned, the experiences I’ve had and those who chose to remain close to me even though they’ve gotten to know me well enough to realize that ‘sugar, spice and everything nice’ need not apply.

What I learned during 30 hours without power in the Nordics

I wake up in the Nordics, inland off the coast of Ostrobothnia, I wake to the snow gently falling on the trees. I was so excited to be able to see the first snowfall. I went to the spa appointment I had made for my manicure and facial, then planned to visit the store because there was nothing at the cottage to eat. Once I emerged from my appointment, feeling fresh and glowy as ever a girl can, I realized that the gently falling snow had turned into huge soft flakes and many centimetres of snow on the ground. Still beautiful and peaceful. I was excited about the prospect of building a snowman and drinking hot cocoa by the fire. I had been informed by my driver that the snow would continue to fall throughout the evening and into the next day. And it did. The snow fell and fell until it was up to the calves of my legs. And then, at after 5 in the evening on Friday night, it happened. I heard a *dink, dink, dink sound and Whabam! Lights out.

They flickered on and off a few times and I was starting to curse the cottage in which I’m staying. It wasn’t until friends arrived and informed me that the entire village was pitch black. So much so that even their bus drove past the stop.

Dinner that night was cheese wraps and apples. We played on our cell phones and other tech, assuming naively that the power would return ‘any minute now’. Of course, there were candles everywhere, which we lit just so we could see in the ever increasing darkness of the North. Thankfully, the cottage was stocked with candles and extra fuses.

That night, it was kind of an adventure in ‘roughing it’. A ‘welcome’ to the territory, if you will. Challenging, but almost fun in a forced romanticism kind of way where yea, its dark…but you aren’t actually worried about anything. I could’ve used one of these to spin the warm beer in the snow to chill and drink that evening.

7 in the morning Saturday. Woke up to a big bang and…light! For all of 5 minutes. Had I known then what I know now, I would have used that 5 minutes to charge my cell, make coffee, boil water and microwave food. Instead, what do I do? Shiver, roll over and close my eyes. Stupid, stupid, girl.

I dragged myself out of bed about an hour later, complaining about the cold and wondering at the lack of electricity…still. Little did I know that more than 30 000 others were enjoying the same situation as I.

Saturday went at a snails pace. Can you say hello frustration and irritability? That didn’t last long before we all realized that nothing would be accomplished by snapping at one another. Thankfully. With no coffee (that I was aware of…I found out later that an angel DID in fact use that 5 minutes to make something hot and left it in a thermos for all to enjoy), no technology, no lights, no hot water, no edible food, and cold as _____ outside , there wasn’t exactly a plethora of options to distract from the current predicament. So, we all went outside and grabbed shovels to shovel our way out of the cottage and onto the road. Afterwards, things got inventive. There was one place in which to make a fire, but not exactly a fireplace. More like an ancient bread oven. So a fire we made, and in front of it I sat until I thought I was going to melt. When the flames died out, the theory was that maybe if we put a pot of water inside the fire bake oven, that it would boil…or explode. It did neither. But it did get hot enough to make a batch of hot tea. Once it was noted how that little experiment went, on came the next one. Hot food. Seriously, is it even possible? With this being our only opportunity to even pretend to make hot food that day, there was no other option than to give it a go. Since I’d visited the market that day, there was at least a hundred euros worth of frozen goodies slowly going bad. I thought that I could bag it up and set it outside in the snow to keep it cold, but was informed that it would only attract the animals. So we grabbed the biggest (fingers crossed its pyrex) dish we could find, dumped 2 bags of frozen vegs, some olive oil and a ton of cheese in it, put the lid on, popped it in the fire oven and hoped for the best. This time, hearing an explosion was a most certainty. But…it didn’t happen. And let me tell you, hunger REALLY is the best spice. I ate like a ravenous dog and did not once care how I looked to anyone else. I am certain my cohorts felt the same.

After a quick call to the power company, I realized that it would be at least another 24 hours before they even hoped it might be fixed. Saturday evening went slow, as it gets dark so early in the North. Reading by candlelight was impossible, but someone magically whipped out games and we were able to manage it near-blind. That night, we all slept like a litter of puppies. It wasn’t intentional, but funny how things work out that way. No problem though because it was that cold inside that I’m sure we were all quite grateful for the extra body heat.

Sunday morning. My phone had been off for the most part because I was terrified that there would be an emergency and nobody would have the battery power to call out after a few days of this. I checked the news and realized that because of the…well, blizzard basically, the count of households without electricity had increased from 30 000 to almost 70 000 over night! In a country with a total populace of 5,5 million; 70 000 is an enormous number. OK, ‘we wait’ I said to myself. Although I was mad as a hornet when I woke up this morning because I’m already getting sick, the temp has dropped significantly, and the food…well, the food is going straight to the bin.

Bread breakfast. Enough, I’m calling the power company. I almost felt bad because the customer service rep was just as nice as she could be, but I had to insist that something be done somehow and an estimate given. Sure enough, within a couple of hours there were men working on every power line on the main road (as far as I could see). And then, magic happened. *Dink *dink….POWER!

It’s now Sunday, and the lights have just returned. I’m sick, it’s freezing in here and at least 200 euros worth of food has perished. But we can see! The radiator will warm, and the water will heat so hopefully the pipes wont burst. I can cook! I can boil water! I can SHOWER!! I’ve never been so happy to see this light on a strip outlet as I was today…ever! 😀

I have to tell you that although not having power in a snowstorm for 30 hours really is just a minor setback in the grand scheme of things, I haven’t been so happy to see lights…ever, I don’t think. It’s amazing the things we take for granted. One thing that helps enables us to cook, clean, stay warm, see, work…and without it we can do none of those things. They don’t call it a necessity for the fun of it. This morning, I would’ve traded all the shoes in my closet for it. And now I have it. YEAH! Brings that must-have desire for all things gourmet and luxurious down a notch when you realize that its just not as enjoyable in the cold and dark.

Coconut Ginger Tofu with mixed Vegetables

Super simple and delicious way to get dinner on the table without too much complication. This is a good recipe, which I just kind of made on the spot because it’s what I had at hand. Sometimes those things just turn out the best! Fully vegan, packed with protein (Tofu and broccoli) and enough for 3.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 large frying or stir-fry pan
  • 1 block firm or extra firm tofu
  • 1 small package coconut milk. (I used 300grams & the same container worth of water => 600 grams)
  • 1 small bag frozen mixed veggies (I used broccoli, cauliflower & carrot)
  • 1 handful fresh or frozen spinach
  • 1 teaspoon dried ginger powder
  • Olive oil

What to do:

  • Pour a small amount of olive oil into the pan and heat on mid-high
  • Drain and cube tofu, put in the pot
  • Add in veggies and spinach. Stir to fry
  • Once it begins to fry, add in the coconut milk and the milk container of water also.
  • Stir frequently
  • When it begins to simmer, add in the ginger and stir well.
  • Total cooking time runs 15-20 mins, depending on heat. Once its bubbling, stir often for another few minutes only. And then it is ready
  • Spoon out and serve
  • Enjoy!

I chose to enjoy this meal as-is, without any brown rice in addition as it is quite filling. If you are looking to create a more substantial meal, then by all means, cook up a batch of brown rice and serve!

Winter Slim-down week 5

Beginning week 5 of my winter slim-down diet. I have good news…and bad news.

The good news is: I’m much happier 🙂 The bad news? Well, I wussed out on the intermittent fasting after 2 weeks and managed to gain back 1 kg (approx 2 lbs) of the weight. Honestly, not a major setback.

At the risk of sounding like one of those self-justifying dieters who changes the rules mid-game, I’m, well…changing the rules mid-game. ;P

In all my years of eating healthy and occasional dieting, I have noticed one glaring inequality. That inequality is economics. For some unexplained reason, healthy eating seems to cost more. I’m not talking about anything like restaurants. Merely on the market level. Atkins diet, cost a small fortune and weight was regained afterwords. Paleo is very particular and the fasting requires that you give your body all the nutrients it needs when you can eat. So… tons of vegs. It seems totally backwards to me that the raw ingredients, cost as much or more than the ready meal itself. Wheat, eggs & butter cost more than the equivalent amount of processed dried spaghetti…even though the spaghetti company has to pay for logistical and marketing services, as well as manufacturing staff and warehousing. How is this possible? I’ve noticed that I’m spending a fortune on fruits and vegs for smoothies, that juicing seems to waste a ton of the healthy bits and protein bars are packed with chemicals. Since this is supposed to be a lifestyle change and not just a momentary diet, I’ve decided to try to keep it realistic.

So here’s the plan: For this upcoming week (and hopefully easily continued thereafter) I will make reasonable purchases at the food market. I’ve heard that 400 calories of fruits, vegs and leafy stuff will fill an average stomach completely. I plan to stick to the fresh healthy stuff and purchase / eat a reasonable amount at a reasonable price and not let any of it waste away in the refrigerator. I will cut back on processed foodstuffs and attempt (This will be a ssssslloooowwww learning process) to learn how to make my own pastas and baked goods from scratch as opposed to purchasing at the market. (Yes, this will be blogged about….we can laugh together). So this weeks experiments are to see if it is reasonable to expect a person with modest means (such as myself) to manage a dietary lifestyle change without spending their savings on specialty foodstuffs.And also to see if yours truly can start baking without making anyone ill 😉 Wish me luck!

What to look forward to…

Hello peeps 🙂

I’ll try to keep this brief, since I know that time is valuable. It’s because of that, that I am writing this post. Since we only have one life (Which makes time far more valuable than money, in my opinion) I thought it might be beneficial to map out what kind of posts you can expect from me & what experiments I’m facing over the next several months. This way, you can decide if it is worth your time to read and follow, if there is something specific that you are looking for.

  • The weightloss/diet/fitness journey continues. Unless a major breakthrough occurs at some point, this will be updated on a once weekly basis until I reach my goal weight.
  • Covering the never ending quest for beauty: Facials, cosmetics, new beauty products & reviews, creams, oils, treatments & peels, nutrition, etc. These will be posted once I’ve had time to notice results. Or on the day-of facials.
  • Fashion and decor: Photos, stores, links, prices and opinions
  • Health and wellness: Home remedies, massage and I will begin the cellulite cupping treatments. (I’m so excited!) These will be posted on a same-day or day-after basis, continuing through each treatment to follow progress.
  • Home renovation. Yes, you heard me…DIY! This should be the most entertaining of all of it…especially since yours truly can barely wield a hammer. I purchased an old farmhouse this summer and well…lets just say that I can clearly see that in the next 10 years or so, this place will have had all but the bones replaced, repaired, redecorated, rerouted or modified in some other way. These posts will be sporadic at best, but will follow my progress here.
  • Recipes: OK, so I’m not the best cook…especially when I’m traveling. But occasionally, I do happen to stumble upon some super easy, seriously yummy stuff. When I do, I’ll post it…promise! Forever on the lookout 😉
  • Travel, travel, travel! I travel frequently and will be posting more about my travels in multi-part updates. At the moment, I’m kind of here, there and everywhere so you can expect updates from some of the places I’ve been going with things to do/see, and then future updates containing additional information, places, people, prices, and fun stuff when I just have a chance to get it all together, back up my research (I want you to have the same great experiences I do!) and make sure that my tourist brain doesn’t take over.

That’s what you can expect. I only post when I actually have something to say, so you don’t have to worry about your email inbox flooding over with one-liners. All of my experiences are real and from my own life, so they will not be found anywhere else on the web (except perhaps my instagram: my_life_is_an_experiment ).

One of my favourite things :)

Just a quickie post to say ‘Hello’ and share one of my seasonal favourites! I purchased this Tory Burch pullover at the beginning of Autumn when in Finland, at Cotton clothing and apparel store. I love this piece. I have been wearing it at least once a week. Care isn’t too bad either. Although the tag says dry clean only, it is natural fabrics, and I’ve found that it can be washed on delicate cycle at 30c or, cold water, then lay flat to dry, wear, repeat. 🙂

Although Tory Burch products are a wardrobe investment, I am more and more convinced that you really do get what you pay for. This, in my opinion, is very true with Tory Burch products. The first item I ever purchased from her product line was a green leather handbag. I was traveling light those days, so it was in fact the only handbag I owned, so the price tag did not give me much pause as I needed something of quality. (Yes, it matched everything…my ‘uniform’ was skinny jeans and a white tank or sweater.) This bag, lasted me for more than three years of daily use, and carry and extensive world travel before it actually began to show signs of wear! Ever after that, I am officially a Tory Burch fan!

According to my distorted price per use formula, I got waaaayyyyy more out of that bag then I usually would. My general formula is that if you can get the price per wear down to 1 or less, then you’ve gotten your moneys worth!

Formula: cost/wears= cost per wear. For the bag, for example, the cost per wear formula went as follows: 365 (days per year, used it daily)*3 (approximate years of use)=1095 days. 300 (approximate price) / 1095 days = 0,27 cents (Price per wear). Pretty good, if you ask me! I should be so lucky if all my wardrobe items lasted like that 😀

Winter slim-down week 4

Three weeks down, and embarking on the last week of a month. The mysterious ‘they’ say that any habit can be changed (or at least dramatically altered) in 21 days. Well, here we are…day 21. I’ve lost exactly 3 kg (about 7 lbs) and have 6+ kg to go yet. My starting weight was 64,1 kg, my current weight is 61,1 kg this week and my goal weight is 55 kg. (Unless I can manage another way to fit into my fabulous clothing items…in which case, the scale can say whatever it well wants!) So, 10 kg total (or the plus side of 20 lbs) which really sounds like a ton of weight.

It seems that ‘they’ must be correct, as many of my habits have changed. In the lifestyle kind of way, not the diet rules kind of way. For example; I have been lectured repeatedly about the necessity of not eating after 6 in the evening, and giving your body at least 12 hours to properly process the food and begin to burn fat. No problemo. My body starts screaming at me by 3:30 in the afternoon, so I’m done eating by 6 in the evening. 12 hours after that is before 6 in the morning, so the closest thing I’ll be getting to actual nutrition at that time of day is chugging coffee and perhaps a protein shake. It no longer seems like such a task to do some squats and handweights. Usually, I even get a bit carried away once I’ve found a corner of solitude…I mean the heart rate is already up, right?

I have apparently set a pattern regardless of what I am or am not doing properly, that I’m shedding an average of 1 kg weekly. Slow, but reliable so it works just fine for me.

Eating healthy: Yes, please! Sunday was a celebration day for us, so all food rules went straight out the window. We gorged ourselves on whatever was available…and it was AWESOME! (Especially after deciding to try a veg smoothie fast the day before…hello hungry belly) All involved knew the scale would reflect our indulgence the next day. And it did, but we expected it so there were no major meltdowns 🙂 Thanks to all the vegan food-porn instagrammers (*evil eye: you know who you are, and I’m now following you…thanks for the veg choc pancake blueberry, Dear God I cant even guess whats in it – recipe, but I want it so badly right now…*drool, drool, drool….) I have stayed hungry. Even when I’m not hungry, I really want to run to a bakery and buy just everything so I can bring it home and stare at it. Seriously, self torture but sooo worth it because it looks so good! This week I will try to continue to intermittent fasting and eating only between  4-6 in the evening. However, if my belly is rumbling, I’ve decided not to torture myself totally. Snacking on a celery or carrot stick will do like zero harm.

Exercise: I’m pretty much in the habit at this point, but I will be increasing my reps this week. And that’s basically the plan….just to stick to what I’m doing. I definitely do NOT want to pack on all the weight once I’ve invested this much time into losing it! Besides, when cravings hit – 25 squats done where you stand makes those cravings subside quickly!

No-No’s: Fast food, anything not fruit or veggie (sans cheese and maaayyyybe fish, but probably not), tea or honey. No mass produced food. (Seriously, boxed/frozen/freeze dried meals are totally NOT HEALTHY!) And no more cakes on an empty stomach! Blech!

Visiting Finland; Cultural insights and things to see.

Ah, Finland…what a wonder this country is. Located in the Arctic North and bordering Russia, this country with a population of approximately 5,5 million has many things that work in its favour as far as a travel and life destination. I have spent much time here there and everywhere in Finland, so feel confident in sharing my experiences.

Finland prides itself on having all four seasons. This true, without a doubt.

Spring

Spring is a time of celebration for many Finns. Once the snow begins to melt, the sun is shining and temps are warming, smiles on peoples’ faces become more prominent. When the flowers begin to bloom it is truly an incredible experience. And you will not see a happier woman than when the winter boots are thrown into the closet and her heels come front and centre. The May Day celebration, known as Vappu is a huge celebration in Finland. It is generally celebrated with outdoor parties, parades, and late nights. If you are there during ‘Vappu’, do not be surprised if you see a million people all wearing the same hat. These are the hats of achievement, of scholarly success and graduation. It’s a tradition.

Summer

Summer in Finland is amazing. The sun rarely sets for more than an hour or so, the days are hot, everything is growing and Finns are out en masse. Nature is prominent in Finland and the Finns love it. If you speak to a Finn about their plans during the summer, 90% of the time you will hear it said that they are visiting a cottage. With 188,000 lakes in the country, who can blame them? Most Finns have either their own or a family summer cottage where most of the free time is spent during the season. Summer cottages are not chateau’s. They are cottages on or near a lake, always containing a sauna, access to the beach, the usual amenities and everyone loves to go there. Mid-summer festival or ‘Juhannus’ is almost always celebrated at the summer cottage. Huge bonfires are lit on the lake and the party begins!

Autumn

Autumn in finland is beautiful. The foliage is changing into gorgeous, almost surreal colors, people are out and about enjoying the ever shortening days and one can almost watch the transitions of the seasons happening in the populace mindset before your very eyes. ‘Pyhäinpäivä’, or All Saints Day is celebrated on or the day following the 31st of October. This is usually celebrated by placing burning candles at the grave sites of loved ones. Halloween is also celebrated in Finland, but mostly in the larger cities and on a much smaller scale than in North America or Ireland. Also popular in late November is ‘Pikku Joulu’ or little Christmas. These parties are prominent around the country. For the Americans, these parties are much like Thanksgiving. But because Christmas is usually celebrated with immediate family only, this is when the work parties and get togethers happen before the Christmas holiday.

Winter

The winters are long and with low sub zero temperatures, one would think that people would be hiding in their homes for the duration. This is untrue. The Finns have an uncanny knack to make the most out of any weather conditions (unless perhaps it is just too hot). During the winter, Finns are quite active in sports. Any school you happen to pass by with have an outdoor skating area where you can ice skate, or practice your ice hockey skills. (Be warned, the Finnish children who play like pro’s will giggle at your utter incompetence by comparison) Skiing and Snow boarding or even snow tubing are commonplace sports, as well as long distance skiing which is usually done on one of the many nature trails once it has iced over. Ice fishing is also common but must only be done in certain temperatures. House and shop fronts are adorned with what I like to call ice art (flowers or other objects frozen into an ice mould and then placed around burning candles), candles are burning and trees are lit. The winter solstice is a good day, falling on the 21st of December this year, as the daylight will begin to show itself a few minutes more each day even though the temperature will continue to drop for some time further. Christmas is the holiday of the season. Santa Klaus or ‘Joulupukki’ is said to live in Lapland, in the far North of Finland and it is a common trip to make to rent a cabin and go to Lapland to see Santa and the reindeer.

As Finnish culture goes, there are a few things that any visitor should keep in mind when visiting. Finns are used to their space. A Finns personal space is much larger than say in Asia or Italy. This is due to the immense land area per populace in the country. Hugging is not done unless you are a close friend or family member, or after a long night at the pub. Finns are quiet. This is not an attempt to be rude, it is merely a culture of few words. The good thing is, when a Finn is speaking to you, you know that what they are saying is important and genuine. Finland has unique design tastes, one of the most famous and popular being Marimekko and you will see it everywhere.

Finns love coffee. Finland is said to be one of, if not the top in coffee consumption worldwide. Finns are not ignorant. Finland has the top educational system in the world…and it shows. In business, Finland is at a strategic geographic disadvantage. This has been overcoming by the many forms of R&D, higher education specialties, and social policies in place in order to encourage productivity. It works. Finland has a very high percentage of trade and tourism with Russia, Sweden and the Baltics.

If a Finn invites you for coffee, or to their summer cottage, or even in health and wellness places, ALWAYS remove your shoes at the door. Walking into a Finns home with your shoes on is a social faux-pas that will in all cases annoy your host(s).

Sauna

Going to the sauna is a deeply embedded tradition. Most Finnish homes have their own sauna’s, as do summer cottages, gyms, swimming halls and many restaurants and community buildings. If a flat does not contain its own, you can bet the building has one in the basement. The sauna is considered a clean place, and there are rules. For instance, Finns attend the sauna in social settings, en masse and nude. Do not stare and never ever comment on anyones’ body! Prepare to be looked at like you have 8 heads if you arrive cheerily in a bikini. You should at the very least rinse in the shower before going in, and usually have a paper or towel on which to sit. In some cases, your host(s) will have a cold alcoholic beverage awaiting your arrival. Although I have also been told that traditionally this is seen as a no-no and that you should only consume your drink once out of the sauna. I guess it is solely determined by the company you are in. Personally, a sauna beer suits me just fine. Birch whips: Some Finns are fans, many tourists are terrified. This is something that is done only on occasion (but as many tourists know, sometimes you ARE the occasion). Birch whips are made from tying a certain kind of small birch branches with the leaves in tact, together and drying. Before use in the sauna, it is soaked in the water bucket (this water is thrown on the hot rocks to make steam and it smells so good!) and then used to kind of, well, whip yourself with. Your legs, arms, shoulders and back. The birch whips can also be used a form of soap. Using the birch to scrub your skin by bundling the leafy part in your hand and scrubbing your skin is said to have cleansing and exfoliating properties. Trust me, it’s not as horrifying as it sounds. There is something in the birch which opens your pores and once you have finished the sauna and shower, your skin will be positively glowing. Not to mention the fact that your host(s) will be proud of you for not running away screaming (which they expected that you would do). Even in the winter, if you are by a lake, sauna is followed by a dip in the lake albeit quickly (Bbbbrrrr!) and a return to the heat.

There are countless things to see and do in Finland. Many have already been mentioned. If you are strictly a city person, Helsinki is the place for you. Shopping, sightseeing, upscale cafe’s, spa’s and the harbour to name a few. Parks and nature trails abound in Finland, and history is endless. Finnish history goes back a very long time, it is still fresh in the collective memory.

industrial cities such as Tampere have sightseeing opportunities everywhere such as Aleksanderin kirrko in Aleksanterinpuisto.

If castles are your thing, visit Hämeenlinna or Savonlinna. In Savo, there is an annual opera festival held during the summer months. But if you plan to attend the opera, make sure to purchase tickets far in advance.

In Finland there are also many viewing towers with which to climb and get an amazing ariel view of the area. If you’re in good shape, go for it! And while you’re at it, check out one of the local amusement parks 🙂

Winter slim-down week 3

I’m back on the wagon! Thank you for your encouragement and advice 🙂

Two weeks ago, my starting weight was 64,1 kg or 141 lbs. (Eeeekkk!!) I was really hoping not to have to share my weight (as no woman wants to divulge that info) however I realize that it is a bit difficult to follow my journey unless you have all the facts. Two weeks down, and exactly 2 kg down as well. Current weight as of this morning: 62,1 kg or 136 lbs (give or take…the conversion isn’t always perfect).

Given my absolute impatience, it is frustrating not to be losing weight at a faster pace. Yes, I know, shedding 1 kg per week is actually the healthy way to diet. Still, there are some fantastic pieces hanging in my closet that I am just dying to get back into!

This week, it’s back on the exercise wagon. Seriously.

  • 100 squats daily
  • Return to the hand weights, kettle bells and resistance weights (alternated)
  • Add in some cardio to get things started. (jumping jacks, jogging, etc)

As for le diet, I’ll remain on the intermittent fast, but allow myself some protein snacks in the form of sunflower seeds, chia seeds and flax if I reach the point of ravenous before meal time. Back to the yerba mate and green tea during the day and tons of water at night.

Lessons learned from the past 2 weeks:

  • Ixnay on the Carbs
  • Pigging out during a 2 hour period doesn’t really help. Must keep it in moderation
  • Veggies keep me feeling full, longer
  • Caffeine keeps me up half the night if I’m guzzling green tea in the evening
  • Sporadic exercise does nothing

Update: Winter slim-down week 2

Hello and happy 1st week of November, all! Time for my weekly diet check-in. Halfway through week 2. I’ll go ahead and admit it, I have totally fallen off the exercise wagon. Totally. Shame on me.

In the past few days, my weight has been fluctuating quite a bit. I’m not entirely sure why, but I do have a theory or two. Perhaps someone reading this will have some input they’d be willing to share. I have, as of today, lost 2,3 kg or about 5 lbs. Good? Yes, absolutely. Confusing and frustrating? Yes, absolutely.

Here’s how it’s been going down: I totally bombed on the no wine rule. Two nights, I had a glass of wine. I’ve altered the diet parameters after a ton of googling and speaking to a few people in the nutrition and health fields. I’d heard about intermittent fasting (not in the religious sense) to cleanse the toxins from your system and get your body and energy back on track. By fasting, I do NOT mean starving myself. I’m speaking of  more like getting my body into survival mode by taking a relatively small chunk of time each day to eat whatever I want during that time and nothing else other than teas, vitamins and a ton of water for the rest of the day. This supposedly gets your body burning its fat reserves for additional energy after the first couple days. I don’t care if it is harsh. If I can spend an hour a day eating whatever my little heart desires while on a diet, I’m all for it!

Day one of this fasting, I paced like a caged animal for hours before I ate. My meal consisted of pasta and steamed veg. A ton of it. I was so full afterward that I slept like a baby.

Day two result: 0,5 kg down. A drastic loss in energy. I slept late, was unmotivated to manage even the lightest object on my to-do list book. When it was time to eat, I was READY. My meal consisted of leftover pasta and stir fry  tempeh and mixed veg and a glass of wine.

Day three result: 0,2 kg down. Helloooo energy! Most productive day this week. I got a ton of mundane tasks accomplished, but when it came to working out, I just felt weak. Fell in love with Netflix. Hungry. My evening meal consisted of fries. And waffles. Total carbo fest. Felt guilty immediately and my stomach was growling all night. Realized that all the carbs I’d been eating were keeping me hungry.

Day four result: 1,2 kg UP! WHAT?!?! Ok, given the junk food fest I’d had the night before it’s no big surprise. But it is frustrating to work so hard to lose every little bit and then…WHAM! Most of it gained back overnight. After a minor freak-out, I vowed to myself that would not happen again. Evening meal was tofu sausage and root veg.

Day five result: Weight down only about 200 grams. I’m unsure if my body is using fat reserves at this point, which it should be, but I’m also noticing that everything is slowing down. Even though I’m drinking tons of water, my metabolism is slower and my energy is seriously low. Occasionally I’ll get a burst of productive energy. However I’m noticing that it is usually in the evenings after I have eaten. Workouts are a thing of the past.

Yesterday I took myself for a reward facial at Mimando spa at it really helped me feel a bit better. Especially since my skin is drying out and all the toxins seem to be coming out of my body…through my face.

So here we are…now just trying to figure out if this will begin to work as well as it should if I can manage to stop sabotaging myself. Think I’ll keep it up for a few more days and actually do it properly and see what happens. I would really like to know any advice or experience anyone has to offer. So, please share.

Happy 31st of October!

Happy Halloween to all! Yes, its another Halloween post…joining the ranks of many others.

Typically called Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, this day holds multiple meanings world-wide. The mainstream idea of Halloween is usually celebrated by dressing up, trick-or-treating, attending parties and basically joining in the general populace in doing so. However, this typical depiction of the holiday is only celebrated in this way in Ireland (where the holiday is believed to have originated), Canada and the United States.

Although not all countries celebrate the actual Halloween holiday in accordance with the general genre as it is perceived today, there are coinciding holidays on this date celebrated throughout. For example, in the Nordic countries, today is ‘All Saints Day’. A day of remembrance of those who have passed. This is usually celebrated by being with close friends and family, giving thanks for their blessings and burning candles at the burial sites of their loved ones. In the arctic north, these candles will burn for a full 24 hours or more in cemeteries. It is a beautiful site, when a snowy place is lit by hundreds of peacefully flickering candles and the quite or respect and peace. This is also done in varying forms in Belgium, China and Austria. Adding an offering of bread and water as well as candles to honour those no longer in attendance. In Czech, it is said that an additional chair for each person that has passed is added by the families fireplace.

Of course in Europe, cultures have adopted the American tradition of dressing up and having a big party. Although this date in most European countries is a day of reverence for the deceased, the younger generations have begun to incorporate new traditions crossing and combining cultural bounds.

Wherever you are and whatever you may be doing to observe this day, may you have fun, be safe and remember those that can no longer give you candy or light the candles with you. I know I will.

Winter slim-down: Starting week 2

It’s been one week…7 whole days since I started the diet.

I cut out fizzy drinks, midnight snacking, alcohol and sweet stuff. For the first few days I was going strong. Pacing a lot, but going strong none-the-less. And now? Well, let’s just say I pity those around me. Irritable with a smile on your face is like a nagging mother-in-law with a Christmas gift. Sometime’s it’s just easier to stay out of the way and chill in front of Netflix. But that’s what got me into this in the first place.

In order to get through the nail biting stress of dumping soda permanently, I’m relying on 1 cup of coffee in the morning, Twinnings gunpowder green tea throughout the day, and yerba mate hot tea before meals. And instagram…lots and lots of instagram. Busy hands mean they aren’t thoughtlessly stuffing food in my gob.

That said, I have managed to lose 1,4 kg  or approximately 3 lbs. Not too shabby! Seeing lower numbers on the scale is all the motivation I need. Fingers crossed, after this week, I’ll be able to fit in those pants that ‘shrunk in the wash’.

Week 2 plan is simple:

A) Keep up the good work from week 1

B) Exercise, exercise, exercise!  Don’t get me wrong. I DO exercise, but I’m a ‘break-it-up’ into bearable pieces kind of girl. Once I relocated and stopped city-walking the equivalent of 8 miles per day just to get to work and back, I realized that exercise wasn’t as simple as just doing what you do on a daily basis and then adding in some squats, lifting and stretches here there and everywhere.

So here we go. My ambitious goal is to get to 50 squats per day, use hand weights (switch it up, have different kinds), stretches, and running the stairs up to 20 times in a row (hopefully without breaking any bones). This is addition to the sugar and hidden calorie restriction, plus the fact that I am moving boxes and furniture, and trying to repair/maintain the new home…I’m hoping, seriously hoping will do the trick!

New foodie try: Simple and easy Kale chips! Recipe included :)

Several years ago while loitering in wonder in a natural foods market, I found and purchased my first ever bag of Kale chips. Habanero flavour, if I remember correctly. It must’ve been a precious commodity because the price tag on this handful of kale chips seemed like I was paying for it by the gram, as if it were gold. I fell in love immediately, and there was no turning back.

I am not a good cook. Sure, I can piece together a home cooked meal, but I’m not a recipe person usually, so it’s usually a one-time culinary experience and then I can never manage to remember exactly what I’ve done when the occasion presents itself the next time. I am hoping to rectify that situation via this blog and an eternal hope for healthy eating. Anyway, I digress.

As per the norm, whenever I taste something that I absolutely fall for, I go home and google it. If you’re anything like me you know exactly where I’m going with this. You google, always included in the search terms are keywords: easy, simple, fast… And every recipe you find is: Not easy, not simple, maybe fast, usually contains 1-30 extra ingredients that are not on-hand or are impossible to find (especially when traveling. Seriously, how to hunt down ‘baking powder’ in Cyrillic, Thai, Farsi or Yiddish?!)

I searched and searched….I found many great kale chip recipes but all, soooo yummy looking, but too much work. (Hello Dorito ranch kale chips!)  Until this beauty was found 🙂

-Rinse kale and remove from stem

-Place all kale leaves in a large bowl

-Drizzle lightly with olive oil and toss (just enough to make sure that the leaves are oiled, but not so much as to soak them)

-Place on a baking tray (go ahead and pile it on, they shrink down when baked)

-Salt to taste. (I prefer freshly ground Himalayan pink sea salt & a little goes a long way)

-Bake in the oven for 20 minutes at 120-150 C or 325 F

-Put in a bowl, crunch and enjoy!

Simple as that!! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did 🙂

Winter slim-down diet update #1

Just checking in to let you know how le diet, week 1 is going. I have not fallen off the wagon…yet. Nor have I knocked over a market in the middle of the night, desperately searching for waffles, cookies and hot cocoa.  Yaaayyy me!

I’ve spent the last few days free of sugary drinks, no meat, zero alcohol consumption, and no midnight snacking. I was certain this would result in my going absolutely peanuts. Enter gunpowder green tea. Thank you Twinnings! That stuff has enough caffeine in it to keep me rolling through the day and lots of antioxidants so I don’t have to feel guilty drinking a ton of it. Best part: I haven’t been acting like a coffee, sugar deprived monster. And THAT makes everyone around me happy…including myself, of course!

Weight total lost due to this change so far? 1,2kg or approx. 2 lbs. Not too shabby for 3 days.

I guess it’s worth it to say that ALL of the sweet, sugary, wonderful snack-y things are no longer in my house. So when those cravings hit, I have gum or protein shake. And soup…I’ve been eating lots of soup.

Product Review: Chanel nail polish and lipgloss

I’ll just start by saying that I’m a total Chanel addict. I adore their beauty products and I purchase them every chance I get! That being said, and bias presented, I would like to just give a quick review of these two specific products.

These are my go-to colours for autumn. The nail lacquer is #663 lovely beige, and the lip gloss is #46. A perfect match 🙂 Like most of you, I usually shop for my nail/lip colours seasonally. It really only takes one set of colour co-ordinating products to last the entire season (buh-bye cluttered vanity) if…BIG IF you manage to find something that doesn’t require constant care and reapplication.

I chose these colors for a few reasons. One, being that it’s trendy. Two, pumpkin-cinnamon-beige…seriously, of course I HAD to choose it for autumn! Three, my autumn capsule wardrobe consists of Ivory, beige metallics, browns, and navy blues. Ta-da! Goes with everything 🙂

I have a problem with ordinary nail polish. My problem is this: It just chips off. You know, those attractive portions of natural nail showing through the tips of your newly polished lovelies that make you look as though you spent your day doing manual labour. Sooooo frustrating! Some things help (like wiping over your clean nails with toner in order to remove the oils before polishing and using a good base coat) but if your colour is sub-par, it’ll last for about an hour in perfect condition.

I’m addicted to Chanel nail lacquer mainly because it lasts. I mean lasts through serious dish-pan hands, laundry, administrative work, cutting the grass, food prep, exercise and hanging out with kids. I am in no way easy on my hands…Too much to do, too little time to do it in. Being able to look down at the end of a hectic day and see a beautifully polished feminine hand just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. In order to make it last as long as possible, I usually do wipe my clean nails with a swipe of facial toner, let dry, then use a good base coat of polish holder, let dry completely, 2 coats of colour and Chanel’s top coat which also shines and keeps your mani looking brand new.

I like the lipgloss because it has by itself just enough colour that you don’t actually have to use it in conjunction with other lip products. It small enough to fit in the smallest of clutches and (drum roll please…) does not require constant reapplication. During the day, I’ll usually dab on some lip balm, then apply gloss over. For a transition to evening, I’ll dab on lip balm, use a light lipliner  and then top with this lipgloss. Lasts well and makes me feel pretty.

Dreading the scale? Me too….It’s THAT time! Winter slim-down…oh boy.

Oh yes, I did it…

Months after the move and I am still finding long-lost treasures in boxes thrown carelessly and temporarily into the attic. Today, I found this little treasure. I was wondering where it went. So what’s the first thing I do? Step on it…of course. And then I stepped off. Totally disappointed in my metabolism, I might add. It wasn’t that much…not a bubble gum swallowing experience. Enough however, to completely demolish my denial and my theory that somehow all my pants had merely shrunk in the wash. And so it begins….

I had just yesterday decided that I would commit to an experiment with cellulite cupping in late winter  in order to be bikini ready by summer. Which I will be doing at Alkeisvoima in Finland. All 3×10 of the treatments. (This girl is determined to look awesome in the sun, sand and surf!) Sooo….because of this, I for-sure have to get working on it. Like, now. BTW- I will be blogging about my progress with that.

So, today is the day. I figure (OK, the procrastinator in me figures) that I can do a step-a-week situation. Meaning that I either take something out of my normal regime, or add something to it. Each step adds up to a whole bunch of steps (I’m sure) all going simultaneously. Enter lifestyle change for the better 🙂

Step 1 for this week is to cut out all sugary drinks.  And late-night snacking…that’s out too.

Step 2 for next week is to start a regular exercise regime. No excuses. Apparently, running up and down stairs, moving boxes, doing the day-to-day and walking is not enough.

Step 3 – week 3; we’ll burn that bridge when we get there. I’ve heard that there are quite good diet teas, supplements and super-foods that will keep me from wanting to eat the couch. Maybe I’ll try something of those?

Outlet shopping for luxury goods; Awesomeness or fashion faux-pas?

Outlet shopping seems to be the topic of much debate these days. There are endless google search results for the pro’s and con’s of outlet shopping. Mainly resulting in leaving us with the same question mark we had to begin with.

In my opinion, it basically boils down to which outlet store you are speaking of. Some of the outlets, like candle or bath/body outlets mainly use their outlets as a final destination dumping ground for their items which are no longer in season, or are no longer being carried. Some clothing outlets either only sell out-of-date or out-of-fashion clothing, so even if you’re getting a fantastic deal, you really won’t be getting your money’s worth in the long run because the time to flaunt yourself in these clothes is significantly shorter. However, since the days of retailers only stocking their outlets with sub-par or flawed merchandise is over, it’s still worth a day of shopping in the hopes of getting lucky. And who of us doesn’t like a day of shopping?!

As more and more clothing manufacturers increase output to keep up with the constant fluctuation in consumer tastes, this results in an increased need for warehousing and thus additional markdowns in order to maintain the merchandise turnover ratio within the main stores.  This, is why I believe there has been such a sudden surge in luxury item retail outlets. Lucky us, excess = markdowns and new inventory = a stock up of new items at the outlet 🙂

Many retail outlets mainly stock and restock items selected to be sold only at the retail outlet. However, sometimes one can get lucky if you are diligent, in finding new items from the current season.

Take for example; Coach. (I will confess an addiction to Coach). The outlet store is usually stocked full of silk scarves, handbags, perfume and men’s leather goods on deep discount (keep that 50% off coupon ladies, you’ll need it!). The handbags are updated and usually one can find a must-have accessory or leather gift item for a very reasonable price. (See mint chain necklace in photo…I fell in love at first sight).

Although there are many fashionistas that swear that your wardrobe must turn-over with the times, there are those of us who need only a few classic pieces or accessories to complete an outfit and that will last us for many years to come. Enter luxury retail outlets. A good, high quality silk scarf to take your jeans and cashmere sweater or black business attire from drab to fab in less than a minute! So why in the world wouldn’t we pay only a fraction of the price for something lovable for a foreseeable future? You tell me! I vote for Awesomeness. Luxury retail outlets rock out if you can just keep your head when you are shopping and make sure that the pieces you purchase are a significant addition to your wardrobe and not an impulse buy.

The autumn capsule wardrobe experiment

Aaahhh, capsule wardrobes…the stuff easy-living dreams are made of! As airline baggage restrictions get tighter and more expensive, it’s advisable to take only what’s needed and only in your carry-on. Thus, creating a very real need for a capsule-wardrobe that can easily be transferred from place to place, or if you don’t travel much, it’s still supposed to create some much needed closet space and a clearer mind. Now packing a capsule wardrobe for 1 week – 1 month trips, I have gotten quite good at. The challenge here is actually using the same kind of capsule wardrobe on a daily basis for the entirety of autumn. No travel necessary.

So, I ran straight to one of my favorite department stores: Stockmann and after some mental back-and-forth on what would work best, purchased the following pieces.

* Navy corduroy pants from Noom

* Chestnut sweater from Vila

* Faux neck cableknit sweater dress in eggshell from Veromoda

* Super soft cashmere Helsinki beanie and scarf from Balmuir

* Navy wool gloves from Etcetera

Add to these an already existing pair of skinny jeans from Tiger of Sweden, Striped top from Tory Burch and beige suede knee-high heeled boots from BCBG and we’ve got the makings of a fantastic autumn capsule wardrobe!

I also could not possibly resist the addition of a fantastic nail polish and matching lipgloss from Chanel. (Colours: Lovely beige 663 & gloss 46) I’m not a huge beige fan when it comes to lips and nails, but this reminds me of that warm cinnamon, pumpkin, clove feel that autumn brings… So I HAD to have it!

WHY?

As my first official blog post, I feel it necessary to explain why I’ve decided to do this in the first place.  I must admit that I’m not exactly sure if people will even be reading this, but hey…worth a shot, right??

Let me begin by saying, my life, especially now, seems to becoming more and more of an experiment. (Hence the name) I enjoy sharing my experiences, but also, I’ve discovered that when one truly needs a straight spoken opinion or advice, it is difficult to find exactly what I am looking for. So, I’m hoping this will help…both of us.

Face care and Cosmetics

This is a biggie. Any woman over 25 knows the trials and tribulations of searching for that perfect eye cream, neck tightener that doesn’t include snake venom (seriously?! Who thought that was a good idea??!) or the perfect lipstick that doesn’t result in a bozo the clown look-alike after a hot make-out sess. Since I usually find myself trying one of everything and comparing products anyway, why not do it here as well? Especially since it’s sometimes difficult to find product reviews online if they aren’t considered some of the seasons most popular products.

Cooking

Vegetarian, on the road to Vegan. Or maybe not. Maybe pescetarian. Either way, I’m feeling my way blindly to learning how to cook decent meals worthy of actually sitting down at the table and eating…one recipe at a time. Experiences and fire hazards to be shared here.

Wardrobe

Champagne taste and a beer budget? Yup. Absolutely. I’m constantly looking for creative ways to make my wardrobe more functional, more beautiful, and longer lasting. Albeit with a less-is-more attitude, this luxury lover will find a way!

All manner of silliness

Sometimes, you just have to be goofy. Especially on those days when I’ve managed to accidentally break my glass sauna door, had an electrical fire, ripped my Marimekko sheets or completely insulted my SO with a microwaved meal. Laughter truly is the best medicine and the world is a plethora of goofiness to get you smiling! 🙂
